Spira was last seen by his business partner at his business, Universal Cable Construction, in West Chicago, around 7:00 PM on February 23, 2007. At 7:09 he made a cell phone call to confirm a dinner date with a friend in Oak Brook, Illinois. Spira was expected to meet his friend in Oak Brook at 8:30. He never arrived, and although his cell phone continued to 'ping' until 11:00 PM, no further communication from Spira was received. Seven months after John�s disappearance, the Universal Cable Construction building burned down. Along with being co-owner of Universal Cable Construction, he was a recreational pilot and a guitarist in the blues band The Rabble Rousers. He missed his first gig in four years as a member on February 24. Friends and family have searched the forested area behind his business without results. Police have searched his office and home and reported no indications of foul play. Both of Spira's vehicles were accounted for and there was no activity on his bank accounts. At the time of his disappearance, Spira was going through a divorce with his wife. Spira's estranged wife, Suzanne Spira, moved to Buffalo, N. Y. , following his disappearance. She died of natural causes in October 2010. They had agreed to the terms of the divorce on the day of his disappearance.
