Catherine Tornquist was last seen on the evening of October 4, 2011, when she dropped a friend off before heading to her rural Hot Springs home. Catherine Tornquist was planning to travel to Rapid City on October 5, 2011, to purchase a camper. She had already made a $1,000 deposit on it and was looking forward to moving south for the winter. Although no traces of her body were found, her son was arrested in her murder a few weeks later. Tornquist pleaded not guilty to the charges. Matthew Tornquist told investigators he last saw his mother when she woke him on the morning of Oct. 5 and told him she was going to Rapid City to get the camper. More than 50 searches on land, from the air and in the water have been conducted in an effort to find the victim. In 2014 28-year-old Matthew Tornquist of Hot Springs was found guilty of the 2011 slaying of his mother, Catherine Tornquist. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and grand theft for stealing $10,000 of his mother's money.
